yeah, if you want to shoot with a tripod in any public place (empire state
building, world trade center, grand central, etc) you have to get a
permit. all it really says is that you are aware that people can get hurt
when there is a tripod out.

I first learned about this one night at the empire state building. they
wouldn't let me up without one. had to go back down and sign it.

in st. patrick's they refused to let me in with it - period.

they didn't say anything at the world trade center, but I heard about it
on the way down from one of the elevator operators.

in grand central, I decided I'd risk it and take some shots from behind
the railing on the stairway across from the resturant. I got about 10
shots off before a cop came up to me and asked if I had a permit. I said
no, and he patiently waited until I had my tripod folded up and stowed
before he walked away. said a permit could be had from such and such an
office down some hallway in some floor of that place, I donno. I gave up
after that.

might not be the case for you, I donno.

can anyone from NYC explain the reason for this need for permits anywhere?
is it possible to sign some form that says you're not an idiot and have it
apply to ALL places?

<end rant>
