I guess apart from all other reasons that mentioned here I would like to add
one more in the list.

If someone asking for my equipment is a person to whom I cannot say _NO_. I
will just mention the price of equipment he/she is borrowing and will make
sure they understand that I will loan the equipment only _if_ they are ready
to take the responsibility for it.

That way in the end if they damage the equipment I can always ask for
replacement. (BUT then it will be my Discretion that how much I want to bear
the damage cost, and the other person cannot say that he/she was not aware
of the price of the equipment.)

My Elan IIe is my first SLR. When I was shopping for it a couple years
ago, my boss (and friend) at the time, who is a pretty good photographer,
strongly suggested getting a Nikon. One of the reasons he proffered was
that I could occasionally borrow lenses from him.

I think it took about a quarter-second to realize that borrowing a lense
from one's boss could be a severely career-limiting move; I'm glad I went
with the Canon.
