Hi Gang,

The information pages for the new Tamron 28-200 XR "Superzoom" are
at the Tamron Japan website:
http://www.tamron.co.jp/A03/

Compared to the current 28-200 Super II (371D), the new eXtra
Refractive [XR] (Model A03) lens is:

27% lighter (358g vs 485g)
9% narrower (71mm vs 78mm)
8% shortest length (75.2mm vs 82mm)
New optical formula (14 groups with 15 elements, including
  2 XR + 2 moulded aspherical elements, vs 14groups/16elements)
Smaller filter thread (62mm vs 72mm)
3.5% more expensive (59000 vs 56000)
7 aperture blades (vs 6 blades)

Both lenses feature:
f/3.8-5.6 [which EOS cameras read as f/4.0-5.6]
Closest focus 0.49m
Rotating Zoom ring (i.e. not push-pull zooming)
Zoom lock mechanism
Petal-shaped hood included as standard

The smaller lens barrel diameter addresses the problem with
using flash on one of the older lenses.

This should be a very interesting lens. It remains to be seen
if the new lens is optically better or worse than the ones that
were rated 2.7 at photodo http://www.photodo.com/ which has
not been updated since 2000 June.

Cheers
Julian Loke
