Hi Tom,

AFAIK the built-in flash is simple TTL on all EOS cameras (with
the single exception of the EOS D30). Alas, you cannot use FEL
with the TTL flash.

TTL Flash metering uses the four-segment OTF meter in the camera
which is linked to the selected focus point. According to Canon
literature, if you focus on the left, segments 1 and 2 of the OTF
sensor is used. If you focus on the right, segments 3 and 4 are
used. If you focus in the centre, segment 2 and 3 are used.

If you focus in the centre, and recompose, your subject might
not be located over the correct segments.

If your flash picture appear burnt out, try bracketing your flash
exposures using FEC.

Although the Elan 7E will sync up to 1/125, if you always use
1/125, the background may go quite dark.

Solution?
Use faster film, like Jim Davis suggested.
Or "Night scene" mode, if the shutter speeds allow handholding.
Or where there is a white ceiling, bounce the flash for more
even lighting:

Some people have suggested using a bicycle mirror:

or a cut-up CD:

I did some experiments with a flash bouncer/diffuser made out
of a dissected translucent plastic film container. I wanted a
simple way to have the built-in flash cover a 20mm angle of
view. Has anyone else tried this?

Cheers
