I posted my first impressions of the camera last Thursday and I thought I would post
some additional impressions of the camera after a weekend of shooting graduation
cermonies. (I just posted some flash comments above)
* It will take a while to get used to 7 focus points. My Rebel had 1 focus point, so
I would focus and recompose and I was doing that out of habit. I haven't been able to
get ECF to work properly and manually selecting a focus point seems to take longer
than just center focusing and recomposing. (Maybe CF 11-2 would be faster than the CF
11-1 that I was using?)
* The viewfinder is not very good for me, an eyeglass wearer. When held vertically, I
can't see the entire frame and have to reposition my face to see the entire frame
(rendering ECF useless in vertical mode). It is slightly better in horizontal mode.
* I think the reason ECF doesn't work well is because I haven't quite mastered putting
my eye in the same place every time. Maybe a little more practice. I hope I didn't
waste $50 for ECF that I won't use.
* Auto selection of focus points is useless for photos of crowds (such as a bunch of
graduates). It just selects one of the points, seemingly at random. I would guess
that it is better for portraits of 1-2 people?
* The film rewind is dead silent in the silent mode. And it is still pretty fast. I
do wonder why Canon used pre-wind in the Rebel XS, but doesn't use it in any model
anymore. I guess they had bad feedback?
