Hello all,
This is just a pointer to something I meant to mention during the most recent
round of the ongoing debate about whether lenses with superior optical
performance are better than lenses with lesser optical performance.
In the May issue of Chasseur d'Images (No. 233), there is a substantial article
about lens design, covering a wide range of topics including retrofocus,
distortion, astigmatism and coma, spherical and chromatic aberration (and why
they reduce sharpness), flare, vignetting, aspherical and flourite lens
elements, the meaning of MTF graphs, and examples of CdI's sharpness ratings
(what they call average I would consider unacceptable). If you want to know
*why* L lenses are generally sharper than non-L lenses, this article will
tell you. It won't, of course, tell you whether your photography would benefit
from that additional sharpness.
