The 100-400 on its own is a bit slower focusing than, for example the
70-200/2.8. With the 1.4x it is slower still but usable for slower and
static subjects. I find it a bit slow to track flying birds and fast,
erratic moving wildlife, though, especially at closer range. (There you'd
use it without converter anyway)
When focus-tracking with the EOS3 I find it best to use a single selected
focus point. I hoped when I bought the EOS3 that the large effective focus
area with all 45 points selected would make a superb flying bird tracker,
but I found it doesn't work so great. I'm sure the 1V will work better for
that. (Can anybody comment on that?)
