Albert, I can't help with the lens decision - I tend to overpack also. But
as to the tripod issue, I can lend a thought. I was asked numerous times
not to use a tripod, both by police and security guards while in NYC. My
solution to this was to use my monopod. I should point out that I'm
handicapped and usually walk with a cane. Instead of a cane, I elected to
use my monopod with a small ballhead attached. I was challenged once and
explained to the police officer that it was my cane and that he'd look
pretty foolish ticketing me for using my "cane" to support my camera. He
deferred but wasn't happy. The added benefit is that the monopod is much
lighter and portable than my tripods.
