Had the same dilemma.  My travel kit for now, admittedly not a "one
lens" kit but DOES all fit in a top load zoom holster, is the 28-135
plus a f/2.8 20-40 zoom, which also gives me some speed in the
"normal" range.  

So the wide end is a common problem, I think.  28 is *not* wide enough
quite often for my purposes, and the above solution presented itself
to me in the form of a mint used lens at a good price.  I probably
could have gone with a number of different solutions, (20-35, 17-35,
20 or 24mm prime) as I see suggested around here, but I'm happy with
this one.
