The 2CR5 and the CR223 (which is shorter than the 2CR5) both contain two
cells which are identical to the cell in a CR-123. so the total power
available to the body is the same. As far as new cameras only using the
CR123, my 1v and 3 both use 2CR5.

I agree with you on the inconvenience factor. From my experience, I would
rather use a camera that takes a 2CR5 as a field battery change requires
changing only one piece, and there is always a chance when using a body
that takes more than one cell, of intermixing old and new cells in the bag.
This can make for an interesting time determining which are the good ones
if you don't have a separate battery meter in your pocket. For that
reason, I did not replace my Elan (eos-100) backup body with the new Elan-7
(eos30) as I was not interested in going back to having two types of
batteries in my vest which is what I had to do years ago with a Rebel as a
backup.

As to the reason for using the CR-123, it mostly a packaging issue, since
the 2CR5 has the same cells, buts adds about 3/8 of an inch of excess
length on the contact end, the camera designers can create a smaller body
by using the single cells, and they don't have to be side by side, giving a
bit more freedom to curve and shrink the body.
