I've used my 550EX on my EOS1nHS with the older non-IS version - so
long as the subject is fairly distant (but of course still in the
flash range) the light doesn't get cut off by the lens. Makes an
unweildy combination to hand-hold, I can tell you! The zoom head just
motors out to the long end - you don't have to override it.
