No problem with the hood, given the much greater normal shooting distant.
I use a 550EX with either my 300 -2.8 or 600-4 for fill, however you may
wish to purchase a light concentrating lens for the front of flash This
will focus the flash' s light beam closer to the view of the 300. I got
one from Kirk Enterprises, it is composed of two plastic side arms with
velcro on the front end. To this velcro one attaches a simple plastic lens
about 4x6" (normally used for magnify print in books, less than a dollar at
business depot) A wide elastic strap holds the arms to either side of the
flash's head.
For tripod use, you may also consider a bracket and cord to mount the
flash above the lens, forward of the body, and such that as the flash
remains fixed as you rotate the body/lens for vert/horz shots.
