I've been using a Tamron 1.4TC (around $80US) on my 75-300 with

I've never tried whales, but obviously that depends on how close the
boat gets!  If the water's choppy, though, it's going to be hard to
frame and focus - a possible arguement against the TC.    I *always*
use a monopod with the "105-420."

As fast as possible!  You are going to need some shutter speed.  Most
of the photos at the above are taken with Fuji Superia 800, and I've
used Superia 1600 - it's really not bad!  You can push the 800, too,
if you can't find 1600.  I've also used Kodak Supra 800, and it's
good, but I prefer Superia - try both!
