Kim is right, the boats don't get that close to the whales. You'll be
racked out at 300mm most of the time. We had two boats, a smaller
faster boat that could get closer, and a bigger boat that was more
stable. We got much closer on the smaller, faster boat, (like a pursuit
vehicle) but we were getting so wet and it was so unstable, I didn't
even bother with the camera. My best shots were from the bigger
"luxury" boat. I stood way out on the front of the boat (a la Titanic)
and got some pretty good shots. No crowds and I could shoot above or
below the railing since it was open.
I guess it really depends on the kind of light you have on that
particular day, but I used Fuji Provia 100 with great results. I used a
Rebel G with a 300 f/4 and had no complaints about getting the shutter
speed I needed. Granted, I did not have a lot of "keeper" shots but I
was hoping for at least 3 or 4 from that day, which I got. Not any
"fill the frame shots" but nice shots of 3 or 4 of them surfacing or
twisting at once. One with a mother and calf shot. I would be
worried that an f/5.6 + TC would be too slow to freeze the action.
During the slow times, don't forget to look down for the dolphins and
flying fish near the boat. Standing up on some part of the boat and
being able to point your camera down at them makes for some great shots.
Have fun, though. No sense getting all worked up about making the shot
if you can't enjoy the day!
