Thanks for the comments.
Actually, Amateur Photographer has carried a review of wide-angle lenses in
last week's magazine, including the Canon 20-35 and the Tamron 20-40, but
excluding the 17-35L or the Nikon equivalent.
Their best buys were the Nikon 18-35, and the Tokina 19-35 f3.5-4.5 and
20-35 f2.8 ATX Pro, although they didn't actually slate anything !!!
I'm not in a hurry to buy a wide-angle yet (I have the Canon 24-85), but the
list of possibles gets ever longer, including the Canon 20 f2.8.
Perhaps Daniel Rocha's rumoured 16-35L will solve my (and others) dilemma.

The 17-35 was supposed to be upgraded with rubber seals, so perhaps this
is what it is.
