All my non L wide angles are pretty much fast enough for me. And I have 
plenty of USM lenses to compare with, including the 20mm prime. Yes, 
they *are* faster, but I don't really need the last bit of speed in my wide 
angles. At 20mm you won't even need AF for anything but closeups. Just 
prefocus roughly and let DOF do its thing. One thing I miss sometimes in 
the non USM wide angle lenses is FTM focusing, but I have never missed 
the speed. Besides, the 20-35L is pretty fast for a non USM lens, as is
the 80-200L BTW. Now, if the Tamron is as slow as my old Sigma 28-70/2.8,
I *would* miss USM ;-)
