Ha, I'm lucky to even see the old volcano most days. Seriously, there's
only a few days of the year when you get the clear conditions you need for a
shot like that around Mt. Fuji. It ain't from smog either, mostly clouds
coming in off the coast here, rainy season, etc. I do think though I've got
a couple of comparable shots of Fuji on my webpage. However, I've never seen
the mountain that clear. I do hope this summer to ride my motorbike around
it on some clear days where there's some lakes and stuff. With some luck, I
might get something like Julian's shot. It's a bugger to shoot though, you
get too close and your 50 sure as heck ain't going to work. In fact,
anything within 20 kms from it's base is too close for a 50. I can fill the
frame with it at 300mm from my home, and that's 46 kms away! I'm thinking
20mm up close where I know there's a little lake is where I'll likely be.
Only thing though, in the summer when the air gets clearer, the mountain has
no snow, it's mostly black. Not the best time for a real pretty Fuji. I tell
ya, shooting this mountain is a big challenge. The best views I've seen of
Fuji are taken from surrounding peaks or airplanes. And they were all taken
in winter when it's got a nice white coat on...
Jim
