In the case of the 24mm lenses, you would be hard pressed to see a
difference in sharpness. I should know, I own both of them ;-) The
Sigma is nice for it's very close focusing and good DOF scale and
probably equal to the Canon in sharpness. At least *I* cannot see
a sharpness difference. I *can* see more flare in the Sigma and
overall I *think* I can see a difference in contrast in favor of
the Canon lens.

But without comparing frames of the same subject taken at the same
location and time with identical settings, this is hard to say and
more speculation than anything else. In any case, I would not support
the "well known" "fact" that the Sigma is "far sharper" than the
Canon. It *may* be sharper. But *if* it is indeed sharper, the difference
is definitely not noticeable for me in real pictures. So I'd conclude
the difference is at least not obvious.

In daily use I prefer the Canon. It works better with my EOS 5, the
Sigma has a compatibility problem. Nothing serious, it'll work. But it
makes a rattling noise every time I press the shutter release button
halfway (even with the camera off) or turn the camera on. It works
absolutely normal with the 1N and 100, though.
