I've owned this lens for about 4 months, and if it means anything to you, I
love it. :) It came down to this lens and the 28-105, and I decided that
I'd more often be shooting wide than long. Since I got it, I've probably
taken 90% or more of my photos with it. It's quite sharp (in my amateur
opinion), and barrel distortion at 24mm seems to be negligible (which
surprised me--I had read reports to the contrary). It's a little bit
flare-prone, but with the hood on all the time, it's not a problem.
As for build quality, mine is rock-solid, other than a tiny bit of creep
when carrying the camera lens-down. I bought mine used from KEH, either
Excellent+ or Like New-, with hood, for about $285. (BTW, mine is black,
not silver.) I think B&H has a bunch of the silver ones (used, of course)
for around $230...
