EOS Re: 85/1.8 -Vs- 28-70/ 2.8

Is the 85/1.8 as sharp, contrasty and have as good color as the zoom 
28-70/2.8?  Are you just paying for the convenience/quality when buying the 
zoom?  Why are the elements in the 28-70 of better quality?
