The 85/1.8 is a very very good prime. The 28-70/2.8 is a very very
good zoom. The prime is better (and smaller, faster, lighter).

Because they have to be, because there are more of them and they are
larger, and they have to deal with varying focal lengths. The result,
while very good, and outstanding for a zoom, still
isn't quite as good as the much simpler 85/1.8.
