<< I think what your asking is: Even if the camera can't
display the difference in exposure, does it correctly
adjust the actual shutter speed & aperture, or does it
 use what is displayed?>>>

That's exactly what I am asking, only phrased mcuh more clearly and
succinctly...

<<< The answer is, it depends.

If you're in manual mode, the camera will use the
aperture and shutter speed you set. Period.

In AV mode, the camera will use the aperture you set,
but adjust the shutter to the actual "correct"
exposure, even if that's a smaller increment than can
be displayed. Same for TV mode.

In P mode, both the aperture and shutter will vary in
smaller increments than can be displayed. There have
been a couple of attempts to measure the resolution of
the lens/shutter/metering system over the years. I've
read answers of from 1/6 stop accuracy to as fine as
1/10. Don't know what the correct answer is.>>>

Well, I shot that whole roll to try to determine theISO rating for Velvia
that I liked best with my Elan 7. The problem is I did it in manual mode
keeping the aperture the same for each ISO setting and varying the shutter
speed to get what the viewfinder showed was the correct exposure (with camera
on tripod, obviously). So that explains why for many of the shots the
exposures were the same for close ISO readings. I should have done it in
aperture priority mode.

Oh well, for most shots I liked either ISO 40 or 50 the best. So I will just
rate it at 50 and do some 1/2 stop bracketing and maybe even some ISO changes
for my "real" shooting and see what I like best.

So in these other modes, since the camera can't display these changes of less
than 1/2 stop I guess you never really know EXACTLY what you have shot at.
Not a problem in general, but if like me, you are truly obsessive, it would
be nice for fine tuning. That said, where the camera did vary the exposure
for a small difference in ISO I can't say that I saw a whole lot of
difference between the shots. But I presume that is because of my
inexperience. Another reason I wish the camera could tell you exactly what it
did as I would like to train my eye to be able to pick up these differences.

Enough rambling.
