Subject: EOS 550EX Instruction manual
> I will be renting a 550EX this weekend and I am not sure if it will come
with a manual.
Even if it does, I doubt that you will be able to get a good understading in
the short time that you will have it. Manul is not written very good.
more powerful flash to cover the entire group, so I am renting the 550EX.
(the room isn't very well lit and it is difficult to take outdoor photos
when it is 105 degrees outside). Any tips would be helpful.

The best advice that I can give you is to put the camera and flash on auto
mode and you will be very happy with the results.
If you want to experiment I suggest that you take a picture in full auto
then take the same picture using a tv or av mode.
If you use a shutter speed of 30 , then the background will be more exposed.
Just watch out for moving people. Bouncing the flash at white wall or
ceiling works very well but depends on how far you are away from subjects.
There is a distance scale on the flash unit, but it takes some playing
around with to get a good understanding of it. Play with the camera and
flash with no film in it and you may be able to get a better understanding
as to how the flash works in relation to tv/av and distance.
I have 2 550ex and st-2 transmitter and when I first got my flash I used
fully auto mode then advanced to P mode and then onto tv/av which I still do
not always understand but I rarely get a bad shot using the flash and when
used in the full auto mode I have had shots that ypu would be hard pressed
to see that flash was used.
Great Flash - Happy Flashing!!

Oh by the way, if you try to take a vertical shot you will be almost
guaranteed to have a shadow on the wall. That is if the flash is on the hot
shoe, it needs to be on a bracket to eliminate shadows this way although I
have had sucess bouncing vertical shots off ceiling.
