I will be renting a 550EX this weekend and I am not sure if it will come
with a manual. Are there any recommended sites to visit to get more
information about the flash unit?

I have an Elan 7E and I have recently been very disappointed in the
on-camera flash. I tried taking a picture of my dog and, while his face was
covered by the flash, the flash wasn't powerful enough to cover his whole
body. My wife and I are having a baby shower this weekend (it will be a
girl!) and I would like to take a group picture of everyone that attends. I
figure that I will need a more powerful flash to cover the entire group, so
I am renting the 550EX. (the room isn't very well lit and it is difficult
to take outdoor photos when it is 105 degrees outside). Any tips would be
helpful.

Congratulations! At the shower try to shoot as open as you can to gain all
the ambient light. You can also use a slower shutter speed to do the same
(tripod recommended). Use direct flash, do not use bounce as doing so
reduces flash output.
BTW, how many people are we talking about in the group? If it is large you
may get some light fall off with wide angles. One idea is to set the flash
(manually) to a wider angle of coverage, say 24, even though you are using a
28mm lens. This may help to ensure good (more even) flash coverage without
losing much in the way of output.
Just my 2 cents.
