I personally find that an aperture of 1.8, 2, or even 2.8 give me much
too shallow of depth of field for 'portaits'. Sure, it blows out the
background, but I like to have more than just one eye sharp. I much prefer
F8 for 'portraiture'. It's still not a problem to 'blow out' the background
though, depending of course on how far back the background is, and how close
to the subject you are. If you're shooting full length body shots from 20
feet, a wider aperture can be helpful, but I don't really do much
'portraiture' at full body or long distances.
