I don't think it's sharpness, but rather working
distance.  To get a 1:1 ration with a 50mm lens,
you're lens is extremely close to the subject.  A
100mm roughtly doubles the working distance.  Longer
focal lengths, OTOH, probably begin to add a great
deal of cost.
