Macro lenses are designed for high magnifications (typically
1:1),  while general-use lenses aren't.  One can often
achieve a high magnification using an extension tube or
closeup lens on a standard lens,  but the resulting image
won't be as tack-sharp as with a real macro lens.

Macro lenses e.g. the Macro 100/2.8 USM are too much fun :-)
