Howard,

as with strobe photography,  the f-stop determines the
brightness of the background (allowing more or less
anbient light to reach the film),  so opening the aperture
is a good first approach.

A carefully placed second flash is probably the better idea
in your case,  sounds like you need a lot of depth of field.
