If your black background is caused by shadow and isn't too far away, you
can try bouncing the 420EX off a reflector. You can easily get 30"-52"
reflectors which fold away conveniently. Try using one or two together for
natural lighting effects. Or there's also the option of using an umbrella
like what they use in studios. The modelling flash feature on your Elan7E
and 420ex would help you with positioning the reflector(s). Having a
wireless setup to light up a small area (assumed, you did say macro) when
your flash is more than powerful enough seems an overkill - especially for
the wallet. :p
