Jim,

I agree with what Craig has said, especially his later post, but also don't
forget that EOS cameras effectively apply exposure compensation to very
bright scenes in evaluative mode. Unfortunately, as we don't know how much,
we don't know what we end up with when we apply manual compensation. Under
difficult lighting conditions, e.g. lots of snow, it might be more reliable
to use a different metering mode. If your camera bag is either grey or khaki
then you can meter off it in 'Spot' or 'Partial', even if you then have to
apply manual compensation.

Having written this, I now realise how much I still have to learn about my
own equipment.
