Hi
I am currently trying to figure out a couple of filter questions, I hope
that somebody can help. I am still definitely an amateur, so I hope that
you won't mind answering what might be really obvious questions for
you.
I currently have a 28-135IS (72mm thread) and I'd like to buy a
polarizer for it, at the same time, though, I know that in the future
I'll probably buy an ultra-wide zoom (the 20-35 (or the 17-35, I wish ;)
comes to mind, with a 77mm thread) and a long telephoto zoom (say, the
100-300, which has a 50ish mm thread or, if I win the lottery, the
100-400is that has a 77mm thread) and I am also sure that I will want to
get some other filters as well (NDs, grad NDs for sure, CC filters
maybe)
I'd like to buy only one filter for each type, to save money, and use it
on any lens I own or will conceivably own, obviously, and I am aware of
the existance of step-up rings, but I wonder how they interact with lens
hoods.
For example, I have a lens hood for my 28-135, and it seems fairly snug,
and I don't think I could fit a step-up ring and a filter inside it.
I know of the esistence of things like Cokin filters etc. which can be
even 120mm wide (X-pro) and while they obviously would fit any
conceivable lens, they are pricey, and, I've heard, very prone to
scratching (- flare). There are better alternatives for these (hitech
for example) but the prices are even higher ;)
To sum it all up, I'd like to know if possible what people here do in
regards to filters:
- did you buy them in the 'right' sizes so you can mount a lens hood?
(which means buying the same filter in multiple sizes). Probably this
wouldn't work well with grads, since one wouldn't be able to move them
up & down.
- did you buy the biggest size (say, 77mm) and step up rings and don't
use hoods on the smaller diameter lenses?
- did you buy a filter system and avoided using hoods at all?
- If you bought a filter system, which size did you get? I do think that
ND grads would be very useful with ultrawides, but to get them to work
obviously the filter size must be big
I know I might seem a bit too concerned about lens hoods, but I've
always heard everywhere that they can definitely improve the quality of
the pictures one takes (less flare, possibly more contrasty) but maybe
when one uses filters the lens hood is considered unimportant.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.
Marco
