Good questions, Marco - I'll be curious to see what others say. I
will share my own limited experience in order to say that I have also
the 28-135, and I bought a "dedicated" polarizer for it (72mm) and
I've found that another thing to consider is that you have to remove
the hood even to orient the polarizer! (or a grad) It's kind of a
pain in the neck, and since you use a CP at 90 degrees to the sun,
you're right on the edge of flare danger, so you feel like you want
that lens hood.
I've also been experimenting with similar questions on my FD kit,
where I have 52, 55, and 58mm filter sizes. I haven't settled on an
arrangement yet, but one way around lens hood problems is to use
rubber collapsable ones that screw into the filter thread. I have one
of each filter size that I use (they're cheap) and can just screw it
on to the lens OR the step-up ring/filter, whatever I'm using.
Another benefit of these is that you can fold them back quickly to
twist a polarizer, or remove a lens cap. You just have to be careful
about vignetting on w/a lenses. They make special w/a rubber hoods.
It's fiddly, though, as they add a lot of diameter to the lens, and
make bag storage harder, so I end up taking them on and off a lot.
The plastic tulip hoods at least store reversed, and more compactly.
Arrg. I hate the "fiddly" aspect of photography!
Lens caps are another problem with step-up rings and lens hoods. I'll
just mention that I've found the Tamron lens caps (available
seperately) to be a life saver, with their inner release clips. On
the 28-135 I can barely get the Canon lens cap on and off with the
hood deployed. Kind of hurts your concentration when trying to grab a
shot! Especially since I won't traipse around in wetlands brush with
no lens cap on!
I do also have a lens with a 77mm thread, and so far I haven't bought
any filters for it. Am also considering a 72-77 step-up ring, and
buying dedicated filters only for those that I would use regularly.
But you're right, it's a dilemma.
I've just bought my first Cokin mounting stuff - P-series, and I'm
looking forward to experimenting with that.
