Snipped from the Canon Camera Museum:

Viewfinder coverage:
EOS 300 (Rebel2k - MY old camera): 90%
EOS 5 (A2): 94%
EOS 3 (my NEW camera): 97%
EOS 1 series: 100%

So, the EOS 3 viewfinder is best treated as a 100% viewfinder (there's so little
outside the viewfinder that will hit the film, that you can just ignore the effect).

The 35mm film covers an area of 864 mm2 (24*36). 97% of this is 838 mm2, wich is a
difference of 26 mm2.
If anyone bothers to calculate the "thickness" of the line around the film area that
the viewfinder can't see, I'd guess it is less than .5 mm...

Conclution: Allways leave some space around the subject in the viewfinder...
