Umm, suggest you do the same.

A "golden rectangle" is one where the ratio between
the short and long sides is approx 1.6 to 1
(1.618033989... to be more precise).

An 8x10 rectangle has a ratio of 1.25 to 1.  An 8x12
(and the 35mm frame) come closer, at 1.5 to 1.

I think the real reason 8x10 is more popular is just
the dead weight of tradition.
