Don't forget the film speed part of the formula. Advertised flash
range is for ISO 100 film.
As to your other questions - yes, it has to do with what effect you
want. Both are options. If it's a difficult subject to track, like a
Tern, I suggest trying auto focus point select. And choose your
backdrop carefully, as your camera will want to focus on it as soon as
that little bird darts away from one of your FPs.
