I am considering purchasing a Better Beamer for flash with a Canon 300mm lens
and an Elan 7. What would happen if I used my 420 EX for fill flash without
the Better Beamer? Would there be interference with the flash light pattern
from the lens with the flash mounted on the hot shoe. Does the Better Beamer
just throw the light further or is the pattern also changed so that the lens
does not interfere? How effective would a 420EX without the Better Beamer be
with a 300mm. I realize this depends on how far you are from the
subject.....so lets just take two examples, say 10 feet which would be within
the usual flash distance without a telephoto and 30 feet which would be
beyond the usual distance for flash (but would it be beyond the usual
distance for fill flash)?
While on the subject, if using the flash for just fill do folks usually apply
negative FEC or is the camera usually do a good exposure job on its own?
