Predicative focus is not magic, so it won't do everything for you, I find
even with EOS-3 with EF100-400, my best bet is to manually track the subject
in the middle of the frame, then pan across the path of the subject with it
as you squeeze off your shots, at high enough shutter speed, you will
probably freeze everything, ie foreground and background, but at lower
shutter speed you will have a nicely un-blurred subject with a blurry
background, which is usually preferable to the opposite.
That is unless you do want the subject to be blurred.
