Everything I've read (and seen) suggests that this is something to be used with
care--you can lose a lot of sharpness.
Given current prices, the Canon FS4000 would seem a better value than the Nikon
LS-40 (4000 ppi vs. 2900 ppi, although the Nikon wins in dynamic range: 3.6 vs.
3.4). The Nikon, like the Minolta Scan Dual II, offers only a USB connection (so
it appears) whereas the Canon offers both USB and SCSI, which could be a plus
for some.
