If you're in it for the long run, the 380 (and 420 I believe) don't have
manual modes.  I bought a 380 before the 550 came out and it is useful for
most auto setting and as a fill flash, but it doesn't swivel (which you need
for vertical orientation shots) or the ability to set zoom settings or
manual flash output.  For your class, I'd bet you would want the ability to
set it manually.  The 550 (which I now own also); however, is bigger and
heavier and can be overpowering for use as a macro flash.  My 2 cents.
