The day Canon does that, Nikon will most likely follow! Maybe you'll
just have to buy a Leica. They surely won't have IS (or autofocus)!
Jokes aside, I tend to agree with you on the real need of IS on shorter
focal lengths. There is of course, the "commercial need" of such
improvements, which more often than not wins over photographer's real
needs. I'd rather see a new 24-70, or better still, a 24-90/2.8 L zoom
than a 28-70/2.8 L IS. I own a 28-70/2.8 and frankly, never felt the
need for IS with it. A 180mm or 100mm IS macro, for example, would make
much more sense.
