Hi,
Either body or either lens is probably a good choice,
both bodies and both lenses seem to be rated quite
well. But I must admit I'm not sure why you aren't
considering the alternate combinations of Elan 7 with
100 USM and EOS 3 with Tamron 90?
Any combination of these bodies and lenses should
balance quite nicely. The weights are as follows
(metric I'm afraid)
EOS 3 - 780g
Elan 7 - 575g
Canon 100 USM - 600g
Tamron 90 - 403g
Yes there is a 50% increase in weight going from the
Tamron to the Canon lens. But 600g (1.5lb?) is not
that heavy - only about 60g more than the 28-135 Canon
lens that is usually on my EOS 30 (Elan 7e).
If you think it's an issue, then a simple solution
with the Elan 7 is to fit it with a BP-300 battery
pack. Its weight plus the additional weight of 4 AA
batteries will bring the lens body ratio quite a bit
closer and also improve camera handling as well.
I guess what I'm saying is that IMO you can't rule out
*any* combination of these bodies and lenses on
balance. It's something that can be managed to a
reasonable extent. The most significant set of issues
I would consider are the performance and feature
expectations that you have from the camera body (as a
former Canon A1 owner I can say that either body has
far more features than it or the AE1-P) and the
optical quality of the lenses and things like speed of
focusing, quietness, build quality and, yes, price (of
both body and lens).
Regards
Gary
