You can get 380EX for about $140-$170, yes not cheap but not so expensive
also. And the point is that you really have no use for built-in flash if it
gets blocked by lens hood. For exmple EF28-135 on EOS 30/Elan 7 is blocking
flash even without hood when fully zoomed out. But if you use those smaller
size kit lenses or EF50 any version then yes, built-in flash could be
useful.

Agreed, near infrared AF assist on EOS 50/ElanII was WAY better solution.
