First, I'm not a PJ (photojournalist), but if I were going to try this, my
setup would be:

FujiPress or other high speed film at 800 or 1600
Canon Camera that supports EX Flash
EX Flash (380, 420, or 550) with Omnibounce attached

For focus, the flash would assist (provide the IR assist). I would also set
F8 (to cover any focusing inaccuracies) and "be there" unless it was a
distant shot and I thought the flash wouldn't reach that far at F8. For
close and near close ranges (8' to 16'), the flash should cover it without
any problems with 800 speed film and F8.

"F8 and be there" is the rule. Adjust film speed (by purchasing the right
film) as necessary.

I know the question was about the Elan 7 and how you would do it, but with
the EX flash, the white autofocus assist light wouldn't be a problem if you
used and external flash. I think you guys are expecting too much in dim
situations from the built in flash and AF assist. If it's that dim, you'd
better have external flash or put it on a tripod, in which case you should
be able to take the time to focus manually. Built in flash is for fill (in
bright situations) or snap shots.

Just my opinion and I'm not trying to start a flame war.

Happy shooting, JD
