Hi Gerry,
No one is disputing that the Elan 7E does not behave the
same as the Elan II in low light. While you have chosen not
to buy that camera, complaining doesn't help those of us
that already have the camera.
In the same way that a folded piece of paper can fix
"short battery" BC syndrome on the Elan II., here are my
suggestions for reference to other Elan 7E users if low
light:
1) Use the central AF point in low light
2) Use manual focus
3) Turn off the AF assist using CF7=1 or CF7=2
4) Use an ST-E2
5) Use an accessory hotshoe flash. Use CF7=3 if necessary.
Since setting a CF on the Elan 7 requires three dial turns
and one button press, here is a scheme that allows a single
switch to control flash and no-flash shots using an Elan 7E
with a 550EX.
Prepare by switching the 550EX to E-TTL "master", and set
the 550EX main flash output to OFF (5 pushes of "SEL/SET",
then "-").
When you want flash, just switch out of "master".
When you just want AF assist again, switch to "master".
Note: the flash will still fire for E-TTL metering and
slave flash control, but not for the exposure.
Cheers
Julian Loke
