Hi David-
For the record, I've owned an A2 (US version, non-eye controlled) for
about 5 years and I've never had any problem with the command dial
breaking. It's stiff as all get-out - sometimes seriously ticking me off
- but it's never broken. So I'll echo the thought that a potential
problem with the command dial is not a big enough reason (IMO) for not
buying the A2.
I'm not recommending the A2 over the Elan7, I'm just saying.
I would also never buy the Elan... for at least two reasons. (and they're
big ones for me, so I won't list everything I don't like about the Elan 7)
1) the battery pack doesn't have controls for vertical operation. I love
the vertical grip on my A2 and would never buy another body with out it.
It makes vertical shots so much easier and intuitive. If you buy the A2,
you MUST get the VG-10 to go with it. 2) Moving the focusing point
selection process on the Elan 7 to the quick command dial is something I
would never get use to. (unless you can move it to the main dial with a
CF or something) Gotta do it with my index finger. I've been doing it
for too many years to lean it all over again. Some changes I could get
used to for sure, but that's not one of them. Of course, this is your
first EOS body, so you'd never know the difference, right?
Personally, I'm thinking about upgrading to a 3. For a bunch of reasons.
1) High speed flash sync. 2) 7 fps even in AI Servo 3) Lighted LCD.
(long live the 630!) I know it seems like a insignificant feature, but I
get seriously annoyed when it's pitch black and I can't read the LCD!!
Anyway... my point is... I love my A2, but the technology in that body is
going on a decade old. I know... exposure is exposure, but there's more
to life than an accurate meter. (Like spot metering, and
weather-proofing... reasons 4 and 5 for the EOS 3) If I had to get rid of
my A2, I wouldn't consider the Elan 7 an "upgrade".
My 2W,
Green
