I'm not sure if you mentioned this previously, but you can set this 
same custom function to fire the AF assist light but not fire the 
flash. This works on both the built in flash and an external 
Speedlite and helps with quick focussing. Of course, if you won't NO 
flash at all (such as in places that forbid it) then, yes, the AF 
assist from the built in flash is unusable.
