In UK magazine "Practical Photography", June 2001, there was a test between 
Dynax 9, F5 and EOS 1v.  The EOS 1v came out as the winner (but there was 
little difference).

Here's what they said about F5's metering: "Brilliant and versatile ambient 
lightmeter but now looking dated in the flash metering department."  As for 
the EOS 1v: "Ahead of the rest for flash control and very flexible for 
ambient light."
