Well, I've just wanted to get back to the list re *not* having IS with the
70-200mm f/2.8L lens just in case there were people who are wondering
whether the higher cost IS version of this lens is worth it.
IMO, I don't believe that for the casual photography that I do of relatively
slow moving subjects, it is of benefit.

I was shooting with Fuji Superia ISO 200 film on a very windy/gusty/sunny
day at full zoom with the non IS lens without a tripod, and the lens had no
problems with blurriness due to camera shame. I haven't blown up the pics,
but they looked pretty tack sharp to me.

I then tried flash photography in a very dimly lit restautant, subjects
being around 2 metres away, so using the short end of the zoom. There was
one shot which did come out blurred when the subjects moved after the flash
unit went off but the shutter hadn't closed. So I expected one blurred
shot, and only one I got, from a sample of around 10 indoor dark shots,
which I wouldn't normally shoot anyway.

So, I think for casual photography, the IS isn't worth it. But if you are
professional and cost isn't an issue, then the IS 70-200mm 2.8L is probably
important.

Or as someone else had pointed out, tired arms carrying around a heavy piece
of glass all day may need IS. :)

Hi Lawrance:

I offered the hypothetical question of "why the 70-200 IS" a while back too,
as the regular 70-200 is neither a slow nor particularly long lens so would
the IS feature be of substantial benefit? A lot of people thought it would
apparently as plenty are eager to shell out the kind of dough it's going to
cost.
