Some older bodies (maybe newer ones too?) would draw current when a
button was pressed, even in the "L" position
(http://bobatkins.furfly.net/info/eosfaq.htm section 8.1.3.). 
Apparently, the "L" position merely prevents shutter release.  When I
owned my A2E, I left the command dial set to "M" always (I was afraid of
the dreaded command dial breakage)... batteries lasted for months.
