The point of auto-bracketing is to give you three identical frames at different
exposures. You can shift the "center" of the three exposures using the
exposure-compensation dial. If you only want two exposures, simply shoot one
frame, then apply exposure compensation and shoot the second frame. Trying to
"trick" the bracketing function using continuous drive as you describe seems to
me unnecessarily complex.

Yes. The function setting is just above the AEB setting on the LCD (page 76).

Set flash compensation to the value you desire and then set the regular exposure
compensation to +1/2. The regular exposure compensation affects the overall
ambient-light exposure and the flash compensation controls the flash output.
Remember to stay in the "Creative Zone" if you want a balanced exposure (flash
and ambient both).
